Alonso Tops Opening Practice at Marina Bay

Singapore Grand Prix

This weekend includes the main event starting at 13:00 BST on Sunday.

Real-time commentary provided on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sport.

FP1 Results Summary

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso set the pace ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Dutch ace during FP1 at the Marina Bay race.

The British team's title rivals Australian rookie and British talent finished the session in fifth and sixth.

The young Australian was over two tenths speedier than Norris.

The experienced Spaniard was a slim margin leading of Leclerc and 0.276secs faster than the Red Bull star.

The Italian squad's seven-time champion was just outside the top three.

Weekend Outlook

Unlikely that the Silverstone-based team will be in the mix for P1.

Nonetheless, the outfit are confident of a better weekend on a technical venue that is better matched to their chassis, which performs better when significant amounts of aerodynamic grip are called for.

Veteran racer Alonso is also known as a Marina Bay expert, and usually excels on the Singapore circuit.

But he was likely running reduced weight or a more aggressive setting than his competitors, or each, to post the fastest lap.

Team Updates

Partner Lance Stroll was a significant margin behind in P18.

He had difficulties with his seat during the initial runs and was also running test items.

The first session in Marina Bay is not reflective of race pace under lights as it is run in daylight in early evening, while grid-deciding session and the grand prix are run after dark.

Points Situation

Piastri has an advantage over his teammate by a solid margin with seven races to go entering the Grand Prix in the Lion City.

The Woking-based team are poised to secure the manufacturers' crown on Sunday.

Sole scenario they can fail to secure it in this race is if Mercedes outscore them by over thirty or Ferrari manage it by a similar margin.

Red Bull Update

The energy drink brand's team are positive of a positive weekend after Verstappen's victories in Monza and Baku leading into this event.

They were relieved when drizzle occurring ahead of FP1 abated by the time the vehicles emerged on a surface that had remained dry.

Motorsport adviser Helmut Marko commented prior to running that they wanted a dry hour to make a comprehensive start on optimizing their car configuration for the weekend.
