Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
