Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad While McCarthy Omitted
Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are also absent because of injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".
After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third number 10 selected as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in the English city previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the captain fails to recover fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on Tuesday.
