Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Squad to Face India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected selection.
Recent Form Lead to Omission
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of forty-seven in his last 10 ODI innings.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test recall ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Team Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Additions and Fitness News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Strategy and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
